Jennifer Lopez Inks Multi-Year Netflix Deal to Spotlight “Diverse Female Actors, Writers, and Filmmakers”

Let’s get loud — Jennifer Lopez has inked a multi-year, first-look deal with Netflix. The actress, singer, and CEO of Nuyorican Productions has signed alongside her producing partners Benny Medina and Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, and will produce a slate of scripted and unscripted film and television content that plans to spotlight “diverse female actors, writers, and filmmakers.”

“I am excited to announce my new partnership with Netflix,” Lopez said in a statement. “Elaine, Benny and I believe there is no better home for us than a forward-leaning content creation company that seeks to defy conventional wisdom and directly market to the millions across the globe who no longer view art and entertainment with the kind of boundaries and limitations of the past. We at Nuyorican Productions are thrilled to find like-minded partners in Ted Sarandos, Scott Stuber, Bela Bajaria and the whole team and look forward to getting to work right away.”

Two Netflix features starring Lopez have already been announced by the platform. The Mother, directed by Mulan‘s Niki Caro and written by Lovecraft Country‘s Misha Green, will follow a deadly female assassin who comes out of hiding to assist her daughter. Her other film, The Cipher, is about an FBI Special Agent who finds herself drawn to a serial killer’s case after she finds his complex codes and puzzles online.

“Throughout every aspect of her career, Jennifer Lopez has been a force in entertainment,” said Scott Stuber, Netflix’s head of global films. “In partnering with her and Nuyorican, we know she will continue to bring impactful stories, joy and inspiration to audiences around the world.”

Netflix’s head of global TV, Bela Bajaria, also commented that Lopez is “a singular talent whose creativity and vision have captivated audiences and inspired the next generation around the world. For years, she and the team at Nuyorican have brought a distinctive voice to entertainment, and I’m looking forward to working with her and the team to create new series for our members to love.”

Lopez is currently training for her role in The Mother, with production set to begin this fall and a release date planned for 2022. Nuyorican Productions have helped produced Lopez-helmed films like Hustlers, Second Act, and The Boy Next Door. The company has also worked on TV productions like The Fosters, World of Dance, and Good Trouble.
