Loki has always been a big deal in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He entered the franchise in 2011’s Thor, becoming one of the most complex—and entertaining—superhero villains up to that point. With 2012’s Marvel’s The Avengers, Tom Hiddleston’s trickster cemented his icon status by getting the band together—the band being the Avengers. And now Loki’s finally getting what a lot of fans probably feel he’s been owed for a while: the spotlight. Disney+’s Loki puts the God of Mischief front and center—but that’s not all. Like WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier before it, the series will impact Marvel’s Phase 4.

With the involvement of the TVA, essentially cops that patrol the timeline, Loki has the potential to let all sorts of multiversal chaos across the MCU. In fact, we already know that two upcoming movies—Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness—will deal with parallel realities. It’s right there in the titles!

When asked how Loki would set up what’s to come as Phase 4’s feature films start to roll out, Loki head writer cited Loki’s overall prominence. “Loki has played a big part in the history of the MCU,” said Michael Waldron. “He’s the guy who brought the Avengers together. It was always our intention for Loki to keep making a big impact on the MCU.”

Loki may impact more than just future Marvel movies—it may impact a follow-up season of its own. Unlike WandaVision and Falcon and Winter Soldier, which were created to act as standalone miniseries with options to continue, Loki’s already rumored to have a Season 2 in the works. What makes Loki the Marvel character to bring back again and again

“There’s a reason that we keep revisiting this character,” answered Waldron. “And it’s that fans really do connect with him. There’s such a vulnerable humanity to Loki. He has tremendous power, but yet he’s so broken and in such a relatable way because of the tragedy and trauma of his own life. And he really just wants acceptance, you know? Love, maybe. And I think that’s just a story that resonates with people. And also look:  it’s Tom Hiddleston. Who doesn’t want to watch it?”

Loki premieres on Disney+ on June 9.
