What to Stream Before ‘Loki’ Debuts on Disney+

We’re just days away from the debut of Marvel Studios’ third original series: Loki. Following in the success of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision could be a daunting task, but Loki’s always up for a challenge. The new series drops the God of Mischief into the custody of the Time Variance Authority, an organization tasked with maintaining the integrity of the timeline. The one thing they definitely don’t want is a runaway Loki causing trouble throughout history. But can they really keep an eye on Tom Hiddleston’s notorious trickster? We’re about to find out.

If you’re looking to prepare for Loki’s debut with a Marvel marathon, you’re in luck: you actually don’t have to dig through a day’s worth of continuity to refresh yourself with Loki’s origins. In fact, your to-watch list for this new series is probably way shorter than you think. This is an evening’s worth of content, if you feel like making tonight a low-key Loki night.

So, which Marvel movies should you stream before Loki premieres on June 9? Keep reading for the full list.

Your Loki catch-up starts way back at the beginning with the very first Thor film. Here you’ll reacquaint yourself with God of Mischief 1.0, a real wily scamp with tons of daddy issues and a thirst for chaos. This film does the job of taking a character who could’ve easily remained Thor’s misfit brother and setting him on the course for being the first great evil of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Y’all, we’ve hit peak Loki. Armed with two Infinity Stones and backed up by an army of aliens, Loki sets his sights on Midgard (a.k.a. Earth) and comes mighty close to conquering New York City. It takes a whole team of superheroes—including his brother—to stop him and his invasion. This is, without a doubt, Loki at his most conniving and ruthless. Remember: this is a Loki that gleefully extracts a guy’s eyeball while he’s still alive! And kills Agent Coulson by stabbing him in the back! Avengers shows Loki at his worst.

'Avengers: Endgame' (2019)

Thankfully, Loki grows a lot as a character over the course of—oh wait… that’s a whole other god. Instead of watching the next two Thor films, you’ll jump straight to Avengers: Endgame—or, rather, one sequence of Avengers: Endgame (it’s a long movie and you don’t have to watch the whole thing to prep for Loki!). You can fast forward to 76 minutes into the film and start there to watch the jumping-off point for Loki. During their time travel mission, a squad of heroes travel back in time to the moment Loki was apprehended at the end of Avengers. This time, though, Loki’s able to grab the Tesseract and vamoose, meaning he never goes to Asgard jail and never begins his very long redemption arc. That means that the Loki in Loki is Loki at his Loki-est.
