Fans of The Boys, get ready to meet Soldier Boy. No, not the rapper (that’s Soulja Boy) — this Soldier Boy is the latest supe on The Boys, played by Jensen Ackles. The series has just released the first photo of Ackles’s new character, which is set to debut in the Amazon show’s upcoming third season.
The suit was designed by Laura Jean Shannon and concept artist Greg Hopwood, who showrunner Eric Kripke thanked in a tweet with the first look image announcement.
“Soldier Boy is the original bad ass,” Shannon said in a statement. “Our goal was to highlight a bygone era of overt masculinity and grit. With that pedigree we dove headfirst into baking in an all-American quality grounded in a military soldier’s practicality with a heavy dose of old school cowboy swagger. We knew that the actor had to have Steve McQueen looks and chops with a John Wayne attitude, luckily Jensen Ackles embodies all of that.”
The release date for Season 3 of The Boys is currently unknown. Principal photography began in February 2021, and has continued through the year. Kripke teased Jensen’s role in the upcoming season of the Amazon Prime series.
“When I cast Jensen as Soldier Boy, the first thing I said was, ‘I’m most excited for you, because of the amazing process you’ll go through with LJ, our Super Suit designer,'” Kripke said. “It took six months but the experience surpassed Jensen’s expectations. LJ has made a work of art that tips its hat to the WWII Soldier Boy from the comics, while taking it in a sleek new direction. And if you think the photos are cool, just wait till you see Jensen in action. It’s one of my very favorite suits. Also, now you can quit clogging my Twitter notifications with demands to see it.”
Fans reacted to the image, expressing their excitement over the Supernatural actor’s debut in the superhero series. “Jensen Ackles Soldier Boy costume for THE BOYS is fantastic,” one Twitter user wrote. “It has that Captain America vibe that Soldier Boy is meant to have while also being its own thing.”
Along with the show’s upcoming Season 3, Amazon has also announced a Boys spinoff series starring The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Jaz Sinclair and Lizzie Broadway as two college supes in the same universe.
