‘Lupin’ Part 2 Ending Explained: How Did Assane Diop Beat Hubert Pellegrini?

Lupin Part 2 premiered on Netflix this morning, finally finishing the story of Omar Sy‘s Assane Diop, a modern day Arsène Lupin. Or did it? Lupin Part 2 neatly ties up the long-simmering feud between Assane and Hubert Pellegrini (Hervé Pierre), with our hero finally getting Pellegrini to admit to his many crimes. The worst of which involves Assane’s beloved father Babakar (Fargass Assandé). But is Netflix done with Omar Sy’s Lupin? The Lupin Part 2 ending certainly leaves the door open for a Lupin Part 3 (or Season 2)…

Created by George Kay, Netflix’s Lupin is a thrilling French drama that reimagines the exploits of Maurice Leblanc’s popular gentleman spy Arsene Lupin. As a young boy, Assane Diop reads one of Leblanc’s books and finds himself transfixed by the adventures of Lupin. When his immigrant father is framed by his employers — the Pellegrini family — for a horrible crime, Assane finds his world torn apart. His father is thrown in jail, where he later dies, and Assane leans on the lessons of Lupin to guide him into adulthood. Assane becomes a master of disguise and an expert con man. However his Robin Hood antics double as the means to finally take down Pellegrini.

Lupin Part 1 ended with Assane on the run and his son kidnapped by Pellegrini’s goons. So how does Lupin Part 2 end? With sweet victory for Assane and, okay, our guy on the run again…

Lupin Part 2 Ending Explained: How Does Assane Beat Hubert?

With a smartwatch, of course! And a series of complex cons, costume changes, and theatrical aplomb…

Okay, but seriously, after being framed for the death of Pellegrini henchman Léonard (Adama Niane), Assane finds himself on the run with BFF Benjamin (Antoine Gouy). The two enlist the help of another Lupin fanboy who goes by “Philippe Courbet,” who also — it turns out — has been Assane’s double agent the whole time. The three men work together to get Hubert Pellegrini to hatch a dastardly plan to turn a charity benefit at the iconic Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris (the site where the first Lupin play was ever performed, btw!) into an embezzling scheme. Courbet and Benjamin also help sneak Assane into the Théâtre on the night of the charity concert. It is here that Assane stages his vengeance.

Assane confronts Hubert Pellegrini in his box seat and holds a knife to the villain’s throat. He asks Hubert to confess to his crimes, which include everything from ordering Léonard’s death to pulling off the charity heist to framing Babakar for stealing an uber-expensive necklace. Hubert goes one step further and reveals that Léonard actually killed Babakar in prison and staged it to look like death by suicide.

Assane then attempts to escape Hubert’s henchmen and the cops who are on his trail. Assane managed to record Hubert’s confession on his smart watch and sends the audio recording to the police. This absolves him of murder, and puts Hubert in custody, but Assane is still on the run.  After all, he is a gentleman thief, emphasis on the “thief” part.

After escaping in a speed boat on the Seine, Assane uses a beeper to contact ex Claire (Ludivine Sagnier) and son Raoul (Etan Simon). They meet Assane on a bridge for a goodbye. Assane then disappears into the night, still on the run…

Will There Be A Lupin Part 3 on Netflix?

Probably! Even if Assane Diop beat Hubert Pellegrini, he’s still on the run from authorities. Besides, Lupin creator George Kay told RadioTimes in January that he was already working the story for Part 3 and that he expected a renewal with new episodes to hit Netflix in 2022.

Netflix has yet to confirm Lupin Part 3’s renewal, but given the show’s global popularity (and Kay’s comments in January), we have to expect an announcement is on its way…
