Jennifer Lopez to Star in ‘Atlas’ for Netflix

Jennifer Lopez‘s steamy return to dating Ben Affleck isn’t her only breaking news of the week: she’ll also be starring in and producing the sci-fi thriller Atlas at Netflix.

Lopez previously signed a multi-year first-look deal with the streamer just last week. Now you can add Atlas to that collaboration, with Rampage‘s Brad Peyton attached to direct the project. Aron Eli Coleite, who has previously worked with Netflix on Locke & Key and Daybreak, is writing a draft of the screenplay, which is based on Leo Sardarian’s original script.

“I’m so honored to be working with Jennifer, Elaine and the rest of the team at Nuyorican Productions along with our partners Joby and Tory at Safehouse,” Peyton said. “Having the chance to direct Jennifer in the title role of this movie is a dream come true, as I know she’ll bring the incredible strength, depth and authenticity we’ve all come to admire from her work.”

Peyton will produce alongside Joby Harold, Tory Tunnel, Jeff Fierson, Elaine Thomas, Benny Medina, and, of course, Lopez herself. Courtney Baxter is set to executive produce with Matt Schwartz co-producing.

The film, which is set to follow the titular Atlas in her battle against an artificial intelligence’s world domination, will fall under the creative partnership between Lopez’s Nuyorican Productions and Netflix, where Lopez is set to produce a slate of unscripted and scripted films and TV series. Lopez and Netflix collaboration has a laudable goal, in addition: to support diverse female actors, writers, and filmmakers. Lopez has already announced two previous projects with Netflix: Niki Caro’s The Mother;and The Cipher, an adaptation of the novel by Isabella Maldonado.

Peyton is best known for his work with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, including RampageSan Andreas, and Journey 2: The Mysterious IslandAtlas marks his first foray into Netflix originals, as well as his first collaboration with Lopez.
