The voice in your head can be many things: encouraging, cruel, pessimistic, hopeful. For Rose Byrne in Apple TV+‘s upcoming series Physical, you can add darkly comedic to that list. Ahead of Physical’s premiere this Friday, June 18, Decider has your exclusive first look at just how funny it can be.

The clip picks up as Byrne’s Shelia is following her husband Danny (Rory Scovel) on the beach. As he confidently plows ahead shirtless, an overdressed Shelia staggers under the weight of their young daughter, an apt metaphor for their entire marriage. As they argue about what Danny should wear for an upcoming campaign speech, they can’t agree. While she’s talking about Shakespeare, he bats around ideas about suit colors. Yet what dominates the scene is Shelia’s biting inner monologue.

“I feel like he’s putting on weight,” she says derisively before adding, “He’s definitely put on some weight.”

Those cutting remarks get to the heart of what makes Physical such an interesting new addition to the current TV landscape. Created by Annie Weisman of Desperate Housewives and The Path fame, the comedy-drama follows the life of Shelia (Byrne), an overstretched and under-fulfilled housewife with a toxic relationship with food. But once she discovers aerobics that almost immediately changes. As Shelia finds her own path of self discovery she comes to question her relationship with everything from capitalism and her hippie-inspired worldview to her husband. Gradually that change is told through Shelia’s sharp inner monologue as it battles against Byrne’s fake smiles.

It’s a juxtaposition that immediately leaves you hooked. If you were a fan of Showtime’s too-soon-canceled On Becoming a God in Central Florida, you’ll love this one. In addition to Byrne and Scovel, Physical stars Geoffrey Arend, Paul Sparks, Lou Taylor Pucci, Della Saba, and Deirdre Friel. New episodes will premiere every Friday on Apple TV+. Check out the clip above, but beware. It may inspire you to take a hard look at what your own inner voice is saying.
