Meghan McCain Laments “Mommy Blogger” Culture on ‘The View’

Meghan McCain is back on The Viewand while she’s been feeling under the weather, her commentary is as fiery as ever. The conservative cohost chimed in during a discussion about the declining birth rate in the U.S. to bash mommy culture and argue for better representation of moms like herself in the media.

McCain, who became a mother to daughter Liberty last year, turned to the issue of the culture surrounding motherhood in America in response to a New York Times report stating birth rates had fallen to the lowest levels in the country in nearly 100 years, especially in areas with the highest job growth for women.

“I wish that we would live in a culture where we would celebrate motherhood and choosing to lean out at the same time as leaning in,” McCain began, referring to Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg’s famous Lean In philosophy about working mothers. “There still seems to be a lot of judgement towards at least women I know and I am friends with who have chosen to be stay-at-home moms or homeschool their children or decide that their career just wasn’t fulfilling them.”

She continued, “We always have these lean in moments where Sheryl Sandberg is like, ‘You can have it all, you’re just not leaning in enough.’ It’s not true,” McCain said, referencing the Michelle Obama quote that women can have it all, but not at the same time.

“Women unfortunately have to make decisions, and there’s a lot of socioeconomic issues in this country like paid family leave that need to be rectified so women have more levity and more choices,” McCain continued.

And while she gushed that motherhood was “the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me,” and admitted she wished she’d had her daughter sooner, McCain took issue with the way motherhood is portrayed in popular culture.

“The thing I would say to people like me is, there’s no representation for the tough bitches that end up becoming moms,” McCain said. “It’s all like mommy blogger, Instagram, Pinterest stuff, and I wish the media would reflect more of a 360 degree image of what motherhood is like.”

In the meantime, McCain seems to be taking on that mission singlehandedly, sharing photos and videos of her eight-month-old baby and her own experience as a mom. “Motherhood is euphoria. All of the cliches have come true and exceeded well beyond my wildest expectations ~ it is hands down the best thing I have ever done in my entire life and I am completely in awe of our daughter,” she wrote on Instagram last fall.
