Woman Crush Wednesday
While summer doesn’t officially start for a few more days, the new content coming out on your favorite streaming platforms this week is already red hot thanks to all of the amazing actresses leading the way. Our weekly Woman Crush Wednesday articles seek to elevate those ladies and their bodies of work, and this time around, we’re celebrating a wonderful woman who’s glowing AND grooving in her latest project, so make sure you take note! Without further ado, give it up for your WCW, the delightful Dierdre Friel!
WHO’S THAT GAL: Dierdre Friel
WHY WE’RE CRUSHING: Friel stars as Greta in the upcoming Apple TV+ Original comedy-drama series Physical, which premieres on the platform this Friday, June 18th. The show revolves around a woman (Rose Byrne) who is struggling in her life as a quietly tortured housewife before finding an unconventional path to power through an unlikely source: the world of aerobics. In addition to Friel and Byrne, the show also features the talents of Rory Scovel, Grace Kelly Quigley, Paul Sparks, and Della Saba.
Physical is already generation buzz and garnering praise from publications like The Guardian, Paste, us at Decider, and more, so make sure to see what they’re talking about by streaming the series as soon as it drops to catch Friel and the rest of the cast’s great work.
WHERE YOU’VE SEEN HER BEFORE: Friel’s professional onscreen career began with a bang in 2006 when she appeared in an episode of the hit HBO crime-drama series The Sopranos. From there, she started steadily building up her filmography with guest spots in shows like Search Party, Tales of the City, and Little America, as well as with roles in films like 2008 comedy Pretty Bird, 2009 romantic comedy-drama My Secret Billionaire, 2016 romance-drama Evol, 2016 comedy-drama Little Boxes, 2018 drama Diana, and 2018 romantic comedy-drama Second Act. Friel is perhaps best known, however, for her work over the past three years as the recurring character Ella on NBC medical drama New Amsterdam. With all of these diverse and impressive credits under her belt, we have no doubt that Friel is an acting talent who will only continue to put fantastic work out there in the years to come, and we can’t wait to see all of her future pursuits and successes!
WHERE YOU’LL SEE HER AGAIN: Luckily, you won’t have to wait too much longer to see more from Friel. She is set to act in an untitled Ray Romano comedy-drama movie that’s currently filming, and which tells the story of Leo (Ray Romano) and Angela Russo (Laurie Metcalf), who live a simple life in Queens surrounded by their overbearing Italian-American family. When their son ‘Sticks’ (Jacob Ward) finds success on his high school basketball team and, therefore, a chance at a life beyond familial tradition and expectations, Leo tears the family apart trying to make it happen.
