‘Grand Army’ Canceled at Netflix After One Season

After just one season on NetflixGrand Army is signing off. The streamer canceled the teen drama today, according to Variety. At this time, no specific reason has been given for the cancellation.

The first and only nine-episode season of the series debuted on Netflix back in October 2020. The series was created by Katie Cappiello, loosely based on her 2013 stage play “Slut: The Play.” Grand Army was Cappiello’s first major foray into the TV industry, having only previously worked on a filmed short called Girl Talk and written for the stage.

In the same vein as EuphoriaGrand Army followed an ensemble of students at the largest public high school in Brooklyn. They take on the chaotic world of adolescence and New York together, with plenty of coming-of-age drama along the way. The series was led by Odessa A’zion, Odley Jean, Amir Bageria, Maliq Johnson,  Amalia Yoo, Alphonso Romero Jones, Brittany Adebumola, and Crystal Sha’re Nelson.

In addition to creating the series, Cappiello served as an executive producer with Joshua Donen, Beau Willimon, Jordan Tappis, Nicolette Donen, and Elizabeth Kling.

The show received relatively positive reviews for its first season, coming in at a 71 percent on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer. In his review of the series, Decider’s Joel Keller wrote that Grand Army is “A well-acted teen soap that’s trying to deal with serious issues but makes its students — for the most part — come off as overprivileged and whiny.”

Grand Army marks the 62nd original series canceled by Netflix, and the news comes just under a month after Jupiter’s Legacy was canceled after one season on the platform. Scroll up to watch the trailer for Grand Army.
