Stephen King is a legend. So, it should be no surprise his book, Lisey’s Story, now a limited TV series on AppleTV+, focuses on a prolific horror novelist with rabid fans and a wild imagination.

The TV show is a powerhouse of talent, with production credits going to J.J. Abrams, top casting including Julianne Moore, Clive Owens, Joan Allen and Jennifer Jason Leigh, and the teleplay written and adapted for the screen by King himself. Decider’s Joel Keller sees it as a slow burn series which will hook viewers with its stellar performances and stunning visuals. “Because of the cast and [Director Pablo] Larraín’s visuals, we’re interested. But something needs to progress as we go along for us to remain interested.”

If you’re like us, however, you may want to go straight to the source material—especially with summer reading lists now in the works. The novel Lisey’s Story is one of King’s most personal, heartfelt pieces of work, and he uses his own near-death experience from being hit by a van in 1999 to tell a haunting story of love, pain and family ties.

The tale follows Lisey, the wife of famous writer Scott Landon, after she watches him shot dead by a psychotic reader. But through her, we are brought into the great writer’s exotic mind, his childhood with an abusive father and a world he created to escape it. In the end, however, it is a testament to his love for her and how their marriage is a bond that goes beyond death.

It may not be his best work (we save that for classics like The Shining and The Dead Zone as well as more recent novels like the JFK time travel tome 11/22/63) but if you ever wanted to get into the head of a massive literary superstar, this is a good start.
