Where Was ‘The Devil Below’ Filmed?

Want to watch a film with a rare zero percent on Rotten Tomatoes this weekend? The Devil Below may just be the movie for you. The horror film released on Netflix earlier this year, and has jumped onto the Top 10 Movies leaderboard the streamer releases daily, meaning there may be some fun thrills hidden in the mystery flick. The Devil Below takes place in dark, seedy underground coal mines — the setting will leave you grateful to be at home, streaming Netflix instead of fighting demons. Still, if you’re wondering where it takes place, we have answers.

The Devil Below follows a team of researchers that try to make sense of recent underground coal mines that have randomly been set ablaze for years on end. Although the team knows the expedition won’t be easy, they weren’t expecting to find other life in the depths of the mines. They aren’t alone down there, and locating the unearthly creatures that endanger them may just be the answer to the mystery they set out to solve.

Want to visit and see The Devil Below for your own eyes? Or, are you looking to steer clear of these hellish coal mines at all costs? Either way, here’s where The Devil Below was filmed:

Where is The Devil Below set?

The Devil Below is set in deep Appalachia where coal mines have had horrible fires, causing sinkholes that may be responsible for a Kentucky town called Shookum Hills. But is Shookum Hills real, and did it actually go missing? And was The Devil Below actually filmed in Appalachia? Keep reading to find out.

Where was The Devil Below filmed?

The film was shot in caves and quarries in Kentucky, which is certainly in Appalachia. More specifically, the film’s IMDb page notes that filming took place in Mt. Vernon and Louisville. Those cave and mine scenes are authentic!

But what about Shookum Hills? Though it’s mentioned in the film, Shookum Hills is not a real place. Search it on Google and you’ll get dozens of results about The Devil Below, but none about the location itself. Sorry — just like the characters in the film, you can’t visit Shookum Hills.

Is The Devil Below based on a true story?

Nope. The Devil Below is a monster movie with demons and spirits that have — knock on wood — never walked the Earth. Eric Scherbarth and Stefan Jaworski wrote the original script.
