New Report: John Boyega Abruptly Quit Netflix Movie During Filming — Without Telling Anybody He Was Doing So

Just weeks after Rebel Ridge star John Boyega unexpectedly left the film due to “family reasons,” more details are emerging about his exit from the Netflix production. According to a June 23 report from The Hollywood Reporter, Boyega walked away from the film because of “a myriad of issues,” including the Rebel Ridge script and his accommodations while filming the movie.

Sources told THR that Boyega left without notice, walking away from the film unannounced. It wasn’t until the filmmakers looked for Boyega at his hotel and found he’d checked out that they realized he’d left the project. Despite attempts from Netflix’s head of global films Scott Stuber and co-CEO Ted Sarandos to get Boyega to return to Rebel Ridge, the actor quit and production on the film shut down.

In an email statement sent to THR, Boyega’s agent, Femi Oguns, denied reports the actor walked away from Rebel Ridge, dismissing the “rumors” as “completely untrue.” Oguns added, “People will form their opinions often rooted from boredom. As stated John unfortunately left due to family reasons which in truth is none of anyone’s business except his own. John and Netflix have a wonderful relation which will continue to grow for years to come whether that be through his acting or through [Boyega’s production company] UpperRoom.”

Netflix is reportedly looking to resume production on Rebel Ridge with a new lead next year. The film previously paused production due to the coronavirus pandemic and had been delayed for over a year. While Netflix released few details about the movie, it’s been described as “a thriller that explores systemic American injustice,” with a reported budget of around $25 million. The cast also includes AnnaSophia Robb, Don Johnson, James Cromwell, and James Badge Dale.

Although Boyega left Rebel Ridge, he just wrapped filming on another Netflix project, the sci-fi comedy They Cloned Tyrone. The actor signed a deal with Netflix last year to develop projects “based on stories, cast, characters, crew, literary properties, mythology, screenplays and/or other elements in or around African countries, with a focus on West and East Africa” through his production company UpperRoom.

Following Boyega’s Rebel Ridge exit, Netflix shared a statement indicating they plan to continue their partnership with the actor. “We look forward to continuing our partnership with John Boyega’s UpperRoom Productions,” the streamer stated.
