‘Good Girls’ Canceled At NBC After 4 Seasons: Netflix Bails On Series Pick Up

NBC‘s drama series Good Girls has officially been canceled after four seasons. The show had been in talks to resume on Netflix for Season 5, since the platform serves as its streaming home under a global rights deal, but the platform has bailed on picking up the series after failing to reach a financial agreement.

NBC will air the last five episodes of Season 4 from creator Jenna Bans and Universal Television will continue to air on NBC.

The series, which stars Christina Hendricks, Mae Whitman and Retta as friends who get caught up in a criminal enterprise, had secured Netflix’s streaming commitment even prior to launching on NBC, which offset production costs but ultimately prevented the show from profiting for Universal Television.

You might be surprised to read that Good Girls has always slacked in viewership. Season 4 of the drama averaged a measly 0.7 on live television in the 18-49 adult demographic, losing more than 22 percent of viewers year-over-year.

Universal TV likely expected Netflix to take on more production costs for the series if it were to become a Netflix original and from a business sense, that did not make sense based on the data.

Good Girls was one of the last broadcast shows with both linear and streaming deals that was pending a future as that model has proved ineffective for streamers and networks alike, especially now that many networks have their own streaming platforms.
