Between breaking down Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics and creating enough decoy families to cause fans to question everything, Rick and Morty‘s latest episode raised a great, unanswered question. It’s been five seasons now, and we still have no idea where we are in the continental United States. So where do Rick and Morty live?

This sort of oversight would be inexcusable for any other show, but on Rick and Morty it makes complete sense. Often Rick, Morty, Summer, Beth, and Jerry are so invested in the sci-fi saga of the week that they rarely have time to maintain their Earth relationships. That doesn’t leave much room for conversations about local politics or regional weather differences. Here’s everything you need to know about where Rick and Morty is set.

Where Do Rick and Morty Live?

Here’s the fun thing about Rick Sanchez and the Smith family: They never specifically say where they live. Back in 2016 while answering a question from a fan, series co-creator Justin Roiland said that the family lives outside of Seattle, putting them in Washington state. That’s been confirmed by the show’s wiki page. It also explains all of the huge pine trees Jerry grabs onto in “Rattlestar Ricklatica.”

But outside of a couple Pacific Northwest references, the family rarely if ever talks about where they’re from in the continental United States. A lot of that avoidance makes sense. After all, Morty goes on so many adventures he hasn’t been to a full week of school in years. Everyone is kind of too preoccupied with sci-fi nonsense to get involved with city events.

Do Rick and Morty Live in Colorado?

One of the countless Smith families from this week’s episode features a Summer who says that they’ve “never felt like a Colorado family.” Summer’s gut instinct was right on that one, and that’s how you can tell that family was a decoy. Rick and his family live in Washington.
