‘Good Omens’ Renewed for Surprise Season 2 at Prime Video

In news that shocked even hardcore fans this morning, Amazon has renewed the hit fantasy series Good Omens for Season 2. Originally envisioned as a loving miniseries adaptation of celebrated authors Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett‘s novel of the same name, Good Omens will return to Prime with a whole new story starring best frenemies Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and Crowley (David Tennant).

Good Omens tells the story of how an unlikely friendship between the fussy, nerdy angel Aziraphale and the fun and debauched demon Crowley inadvertently plays a key role in the Apocalypse. The first season of Good Omens brought together an all-star cast including the aforementioned Sheen and Tennant, Jon Hamm, Nick Offerman, Adria Arjona, Miranda Richardson, and more to bring Gaiman and Pratchett’s beloved book to life. And while the novel has a pretty defined ending, Good Omens Season 2 will continue the story of Aziraphale and Crowley using material that Gaiman says he brainstormed with Pratchett before the latter’s death.

“It’s thirty-one years since Good Omens was published, which means it’s thirty-two years since Terry Pratchett and I lay in our respective beds in a Seattle hotel room at a World Fantasy Convention, and plotted the sequel,” Gaiman shared in the press release. “I got to use bits of the sequel in Good Omens — that’s where our angels came from. Terry’s not here any longer, but when he was, we had talked about what we wanted to do with Good Omens, and where the story went next. And now, thanks to BBC Studios and Amazon, I get to take it there.”

“There are so many questions people have asked about what happened next (and also, what happened before) to our [favorite] Angel and Demon. Here are the answers you’ve been hoping for. We are back in Soho, and all through time and space, solving a mystery, which starts with an angel wandering through Soho, with no memory,” Gaiman said.

Neil Gaiman will return to the series as executive producer and share showrunner duties with fellow EP John Finnemore. Douglas Mackinnon is also returning to produce and direct the second season. Rob Wilkins and BBC Studios Productions’ Head of Comedy Josh Cole round out the executive producing team.

Good Omens star Michael Sheen cheekily shared in the press release: “Personally I’m against it, but the world isn’t going to just save itself, is it? If David and I can manage to not fall out too badly this time it may even have a chance of getting finished.”

“The return of Good Omens is great news for me, personally,” Tennant said. “As I get to work with Michael again, and I get to say Neil’s wonderful words once more. It’s probably less good for the universe as it almost certainly means there will be some fresh existential threat to its existence to deal with, but, you know – swings and roundabouts…”

Good Omens Season 1 premiered in May 2019 and is available to stream on Prime Video.
