‘The Many Saints of Newark’ Unveils First Trailer, Revealing Michael Gandolfini as Young Tony Soprano

For the first time in 14 years, new Sopranos content has finally arrived. The trailer for the esteemed show’s prequel film, The Many Saints of Newark, released today, provides the first good look at young mobster Tony Soprano. And the film’s star-studded ensemble cast is led by none other than Michael Gandolfini, son of the late James Gandolfini, as Anthony “Tony” Soprano.

The clip opens with James Gandolfini’s distinctive voice, saying, “When I was a kid, guys like me were brought up to follow codes.” Then, Michael Gandolfini takes the action-packed spotlight, a spitting image of his father. And all Sopranos fans will recognize the tune that rolls in at the end of the clip: that’s the original Sopranos theme song, “Woke Up This Morning” by Alabama 3.

Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema’s prequel film is set in 1967 New Jersey, following Anthony Soprano years before the series begins. Here’s the description: “Young Anthony Soprano is growing up in one of the most tumultuous eras in Newark’s history, becoming a man just as rival gangsters begin to rise up and challenge the all-powerful DiMeo crime family’s hold over the increasingly race-torn city. Caught up in the changing times is the uncle he idolizes, Dickie Moltisanti, who struggles to manage both his professional and personal responsibilities — and whose influence over his impressionable nephew will help make the teenager into the all-powerful mob boss we’ll later come to know: Tony Soprano.”

The mob drama also stars Alessandro Nivola as Dickie Moltisanti (Christopher’s father), Jon Bernthal as Giovanni “Johnny Boy” Soprano, Corey Stoll as Junior Soprano, Vera Farmiga as Livia Soprano (Tony’s mother), Billy Magnussen as Paulie “Walnuts” Gualtieri, and John Magaro as Silvio Dante. Leslie Odom Jr., Michaela De Rossi, and Ray Liotta are also set to star in undisclosed roles.

David Chase, who created the original series, wrote the film along with Lawrence Konner. Sopranos veteran Alan Taylor directed the movie.

The Sopranos aired for six seasons from 1999 to 2007 on HBO, and followed Soprano as he balanced mob life with family life. Alongside Gandolfini, Edie Falco, Michael Imperioli, Steven Van Zandt, Robert Iler, Tony Sirico, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, and Lorraine Bracco starred as main characters in the show. The series won a whopping 21 Emmy Awards while it aired.

Scroll up to watch the first trailer for The Many Saints of Newark, which will release simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max on October 1. The film will stream for free to HBO Max subscribers on the non-ad supported tier for 31 days before leaving the platform.
