New Movies and Shows to Stream This Weekend: Fear Street Part 1: 1994, Summer of Soul and The Tomorrow War

Your favorite streaming platforms are ready and raring to set off like fireworks this weekend. For some hair-raising fun, Netflix is releasing its first of three Fear Street horror films that are filled with as much teenage slasher insanity that you will not want to sleep with the lights off for weeks. For some (slightly) lighter fare, Amazon Prime Video is offering The Tomorrow War, the sci-fi military action flick starring Chris Pratt, J.K. Simmons and more. On Hulu, Questlove’s documentary Summer of Soul is celebrating the less-known music festival of 1969, the Harlem Cultural Festival. Hopefully this preview fired you up like those fireworks going off all around the country; so check out the highlights and the full lineups we’ve got listed below:

New on Netflix July 2: Fear Street Part 1: 1994

If you’re looking for a chill during this heatwave, look no further than Fear Street Part One: 1994, the latest horror flick new on Netflix this weekend. Inspired by the popular R.L. Stine Fear Street book series, 1994 is set in the fictional town of Shadyside, where a string of bloody murders have shook (or not so shook) the town. But these gory killings are not as random as they seem, and one group of targeted teens uncover the truth — while evading getting murdered themselves. This first installment of the Feat Street trilogy (parts two and three coming out July 9th and 16th respectively) is prepared to add some campy horror to your summer movie lineup, so check out Fear Street Part One: 1994 and the other top new movies on Netflix this month as soon as you log off for the weekend!

New on Amazon Prime Video July 2: The Tomorrow War

Chris Pratt stars in The Tomorrow War, the epic sci-fi action film that is new on Prime Video this weekend. In this military sci-fi flick, the present world is thrown for a loop when a group of time travelers from the year 2051 comes back to deliver an important message: 30 years in the future, mankind is fighting a war against aliens. The only hope for survival? If a group of soldiers and civilians come back to the future (aha!) to join in the fight. The cast of characters includes Pratt, J.K. Simmons, Yvonne Strahovski and more; so you know that The Tomorrow War is primed to be a blockbuster of the summer.

New on Hulu July 2: Summer of Soul

New on Hulu this weekend is Summer of Soul, music icon Ahmir Khalib “Questlove” Thompson’s cinematic ode to the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival. This Sundance-winning documentary sheds light on that iconic summer of 1969 during which a major cultural and music festival overtook a town in New York. No, we are not talking about Woodstock, but the Harlem Cultural Festival: the far-less documented but equally joyous celebration of Black history, culture, music, and fashion that filled the NYC streets for six weeks, drawing people from around the globe to take part. Featuring headliners like Stevie Wonder, The 5th Dimension, Gladys Knight, and more, Summer of Soul’s archival footage alone is incredible enough on its own to give this documentary a watch. But you will stay for the celebration of Black artists that deserve to be honored to this day.
