Why is ‘Fear Street’ Rated R?

A summer’s worth of Fear Street is just getting started. Netflix released the first film in their R.L. Stine trio of adaptations, Fear Street: Part One 1994, today, offering a thrill-packed wave of ’90s nostalgia. What better way to spend the upcoming Fourth of July weekend than with a campy horror flick? If you’re looking for something that’s fun for the family, though, you may need to look elsewhere.

The Fear Street saga, based on Stine’s original Fear Street novels, will be released over the next couple of weeks on Netflix. Taking place in different decades — scratch that, in different centuries — the thrillers are set to document the evil forces that wreak havoc on one town over and over again. The cast includes Netflix alums (specifically, Stranger Things folks) like Maya Hawke and Sadie Sink, and introduces newer actors like Kiana Madeira and Olivia Welch.

Though there are some youngsters in the cast, is Fear Street for kids? We can help guide parents to the right direction — here’s why Fear Street got its rating:

What is Fear Street: Part One 1994 rated? Is Fear Street: Part One 1994 for kids?

Fear Street: Part One 1994 is rated R, which means it’s not for kids. All of the Fear Street movies will be on Netflix; however, if you were heading to a movie theater, kids under six wouldn’t be allowed to watch. There are brutal slayings, people!

Why is Fear Street: Part One 1994 rated R?

According to the MPAA’s rating, Fear Street: Part One 1994 earned its R rating “for strong bloody violence, drug content, language, and some sexual content.” There are plenty of stabbings, blood, and other gory scenes — it’s a horror film, after all. The film frequently uses profanity. Though Fear Street: Part One 1994 may feel like an extension  of the Stranger Things universe, it’s way less kid-friendly than the Netflix series.

Are Fear Street: Part Two 1978 and Fear Street: Part Three 1666 rated R?

Yes, both Fear Street: Part Two 1978 and Fear Street: Part Three 1666 are rated R for the same reasons as Part One.
