Fans of Legally Blonde know the iconic film’s satisfying ending well by now. Elle (Reese Witherspoon) and Emmett (Luke Wilson) get together, Paulette (Jennifer Coolidge) has her happily ever after with the UPS man (Bruce Thomas), and Warner (Matthew Davis) finally gets what’s coming to him.
But according to a new oral history of the film in honor of its upcoming 20th anniversary, that wasn’t always the plan. In a lengthy interview with the New York Times, screenwriters Kristen Smith and Karen McCullah and Legally Blonde star Jessica Cauffiel opened up about the alternate endings they imagined for Legally Blonde, including a musical number that never saw the light of day.
While Elle and Vivian (Selma Blair) were sworn enemies for much of the film, the writers had a surprise ending in store for the women, they revealed. One of the possible endings to Legally Blonde turned the rivalry into a romance, Cauffiel said.
“The first ending was Elle and Vivian in Hawaii in beach chairs, drinking margaritas and holding hands,” she shared. “The insinuation was either they were best friends or they had gotten together romantically.”
While that obviously didn’t happen in the final cut, the two women did mend their relationship. After a fierce feud for much of law school, Elle and Vivian made amends by the end of the film, but remained friends and nothing more. And according to Smith, Blair wasn’t always the first pick for Vivian, either. But thankfully, after working with Witherspoon on Cruel Intentions, she was the perfect fit in the end.
“I remember talk about getting Chloë Sevigny to play Vivian,” Smith recalled. “That didn’t work out, and we ended up with our queen Selma Blair. Selma and Reese were close, because they had done Cruel Intentions together. So their friendship is a great anchor for everything.”
Cauffiel also shared another ending we never got to see, which would have turned the beloved movie into more of a musical.
“The second or third ending was a musical number on the courtroom steps, and as Elle came out, the judge, jury and everybody in the courtroom broke into song and dance,” she said. “I’ve been waiting for somebody to leak that for 20 years.”
And we’re still waiting! Whoever has that copy, you know what to do.
