Marvel’s ‘What if…?’ Trailer Shows off Chadwick Boseman’s Final Performance as Black Panther

Hold onto your shields — Marvel is heading full steam ahead towards the multiverse. The studio unveiled the first trailer for What If… today, their upcoming Disney+ animated series that plans to warp MCU timelines and bend reality around the legendary Avengers. You may spot some familiar faces in new animated fashion, like Robert Downey Jr.‘s Iron Man and Chris Hemsworth‘s Thor, but something seems amiss about our favorite heroes. That’s because What If… poses a thrilling question: what if major plot points in the MCU occurred differently?

Most notably, the trailer teases the MCU’s final send-off of Chadwick Boseman‘s Black Panther. Boseman voices the beloved T’Challa character one final time in this saga, with an animated version of himself debuting in the series. He’s joined by fellow Black Panther characters Eric Killmonger, Shuri, and Okoye. In the trailer, Boseman also shows off his versatility as a superhero, playing Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Star Lord, as well.

“A Ravager never flies solo,” he says, sporting Star Lord’s space get-up as he prepares to battle a robot army accompanied by the return of Yondu (Michael Rooker).

The rest of the trailer subs in the Guardians of the Galaxy for the Avengers in the epic New York battle against Loki, sees the introduction of a star-spangled Captain Carter, and even spotlights Howard the Duck.

Most of the MCU’s star-studded cast is set to star as their animated counterparts in the series, with only a few new voices. So far, major returning superheroes include Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, Josh Brolin as Thanos, Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, Karen Gillan as Nebula, and more. Jeffrey Wright will be introduced as The Watcher, a character who observes the multiverse but vows never to interfere.

Although his familiar face is back, Robert Downey Jr. will not return to voice his Iron Man. The same goes for Chris Evans’ Captain America, Jeff Goldblum’s The Collector, and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange.

The first episode, which is set in the Captain America: The First Avenger timeline, follows what would’ve happened if Peggy Carter injected the super soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers. The premiere will hit August 11 on Disney+, with new episodes releasing weekly on Wednesdays. Scroll up to watch What If…‘s first trailer.
