It’s been almost two years, but we finally know when The Witcher will return. Today at WitcherCon, Netflix announced the Season 2 release date for its mega-hit of fantasy horror series. All eight episodes of The Witcher Season 2 will premiere on December 17. But that’s not all. WitcherCon also dropped the first teaser trailer for Season 2 while announcing that this series’ upcoming anime film, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, will premiere August 23.

The first season of The Witcher was a bit of an oddity. It was largely based off of Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski’s collection of short stories, The Sword of Destiny. As such, the season took on a monster-of-the-week format, each episode chronicling a different adventure in Geralt of Rivia’s (Henry Cavill) life. Threaded throughout those stories were connections to The Witcher‘s main narrative, including Geralt’s own Law of Surprise saga, an ancient prophecy of sorts that led to Princess Ciri of Cintra (Freya Allan) being bound to him, and Geralt’s first meeting with his on-again, off-again love interest, Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra). In many ways Season 1 laid the groundwork. Now it’s time for this series to tell its real story.

The Witcher Season 2 will follow Ciri’s training as she becomes the first female witcher in the history of the Continent. And her training couldn’t come at a more complicated time. Decades after the Conjunction of the Spheres — a cataclysm that forced the worlds of elves, man, and monsters to become one — factions of elves and dwarves alike have started to rise up, determined to take back the land men once stole from them. At the same time the Nilfgaardian Empire is on a rampage, happily going to war snapping up any kingdom they can. As Geralt and Yennefer try to protect and train the rightful heir to the overthrown Cintra from powerful figures who wish her dead, they also have to navigate a budding war that threatens to ravage the Continent as a whole.

If you’re a fan of the books, you already know Blood of Elves when you see it. Fans of the award-winning video game, Witcher III: Wild Hunt, may be a bit more confused. From what we can tell the events of The Witcher Season 2 will take place before the events of the game. Check out the teaser trailer below and feast your eyes on some kickass training sequences between Geralt and Ciri. That’s why we’re all here, right?

But wait, there’s more. During WitcherCon Netflix also announced the release date for The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. The anime movie will premiere on August 23. A prequel to The Witcher series and books, this movie will focus on Geralt’s mentor and father figure, Vesemir. After escaping poverty, Vesemir became a witcher to hunt monsters for coin. But when a terrifying new monster starts to attack a kingdom, Vesemir will have to fight like never before. Get ready for a deep dive into Kaer Morhen.

It’s all coming to you this August and December. Start practicing your sword-fighting skills. You’re going to need all the training you can get for what’s ahead.
