Phylicia Rashad’s Emmy Nomination Sparks Backlash After Cosby Tweet: “Don’t Vote For Her, K?”

Phylicia Rashad was nominated for her sixth Emmy award yesterday (July 13) for her role as Carol Clarke on NBC‘s hit drama This Is Us. This recognition comes after the actress received widespread backlash for a controversial tweet celebrating Bill Cosby‘s recent freedom.

Back in the ’80s, Rashad starred opposite the comedian on The Cosby Show, portraying Cosby’s lawyer wife, Clair Huxtable. She garnered two Emmy noms for her performance, with the show itself winning six awards in total over its eight-year run on NBC. Upon hearing her former co-star was a free man after his conviction for drugging and assaulting women had been overturned, Rashad made her stance clear via Twitter.

“FINALLY!!!!” Rashad shared. “A terrible wrong is being righted- a miscarriage of justice is corrected!”

Social media was quick to shut down the actress, slamming her for unleashing a “horrible enabler’s take” in the wake of the news. Cosby, who was accused of assault by over 60 women, is now free from prison.

“Phylicia’s response here is not surprising but it is disappointing,” wrote one Twitter user at the time, “given her role as an academic dean charged with the welfare of her students, some of whom will be survivors.”

In a follow-up tweet, Rashad went on to clarify that she supports survivors of sexual assault — but still seemed to stand with the notion that Cosby’s conviction was a “miscarriage of justice.” On the heels of this tweet and her Emmy nomination, some folks took to Twitter once more to share their distaste for the news.

“I think we all agree: Phylicia Rashad shouldn’t win an Emmy this year,” one Twitter user wrote. “Don’t vote for her, k?”

This news marks Rashad’s third consecutive year garnering a nomination for her role in This is Us. Although the Cosby stance may affect her chances at winning the statue, it in no way could’ve affected her being nominated — the Television Academy finalized voting before Cosby was released.

The 73rd annual Emmy Awards will take place on September 19.
