TCA Awards 2021: ‘Ted Lasso,’ ‘Hacks’ Lead Nominations

Fresh off this week’s Emmys announcements, we have another round of TV award nominations. Nominees for the 2021 TCA Awards have been announced, marking a big year for streamers like Netflix and HBO Max and shows like Ted Lasso and Hacks.

This year’s list includes plenty of nominees for Netflix, which earned 15 in total for shows and specials like The Queen’s Gambit, Bo Burnham: Inside, and Nailed It! Double Trouble. Right behind Netflix is HBO, earning 14 noms for shows like Allen v. Farro, I May Destroy You and more, and HBO Max, with 10 for originals including The Flight Attendant and The Great Pottery Throwdown.

But it wasn’t an HBO Max or Netflix program that snagged the most nominations this year. Instead, Ted Lasso has emerged as a TCA frontrunner with five nominations in total. The Apple TV+ comedy is being recognized in the following categories: Individual Achievement in a Comedy (for both Jason Sudeikis and Hannah Waddingham), Outstanding New Program, Outstanding Achievement in Comedy, and Program of the Year.

“This was an incredible year for fresh, inclusive content and new creators, and our nominations are a reflection of that,” Melanie McFarland, TCA President and TV Critic for Salon, said in a statement. “The TCA membership selected from a wealth of original offerings that broke fresh ground and presented exciting, thought-provoking experiences that redefined the television landscape. Although we will not be able to honor these landmark achievements in-person, we look forward to celebrating 37 years of the TCA Awards and sharing our top picks when the winners are unveiled.”
