‘The View’: Joy and Whoopi Slam Matt Gaetz for Appearance at Free Britney Rally: “Not a Good Look for Him”

An unexpected appearance at a Free Britney rally this week had The View co-hosts perplexed on this morning’s show. During a conversation about new developments in Britney Spears‘ conservatorship case, co-host Joy Behar shifted the discussion to an unlikely Spears ally, controversial congressman Matt Gaetz, questioning why the Florida politician was getting involved in Spears’ legal woes when he has plenty of his own to worry about.

Gaetz made headlines yesterday for his speech outside a Los Angeles courthouse during a hearing about Spears’ conservatorship case, where he claimed Spears had “been abused by the media, “a grifter father”, and “the American justice system,” per HuffPost. He added, “We need to come together and create … federal change in the law that will free Britney and the millions of Americans who are impacted by a corrupt guardianship system that empowers people to take advantage of the weak.”

Behar was unimpressed by Gaetz’s words, telling her co-hosts, “I love that Matt Gaetz is getting involved in this. That is my favorite thing about the Britney Spears story right now, this minute.” Calling out the congressman’s hypocrisy, she added, “This is someone who’s been peddling the big lie for support, he certainly knows what a grifter looks like, darling.”

Pointing out Gaetz’s own pressing legal issues, Behar continued, “He’s under investigation for sex trafficking and he’s sticking his two cents into Britney Spears’ grifter father? I mean, you can’t make this stuff up after a while, it sounds so ridiculous.”

Gaetz is currently being investigated by the FBI, who are looking into allegations that the congressman participated in sex trafficking and had sex with a minor.

Whoopi Goldberg joined in after Behar’s comments, saying it made her “uncomfortable” to see Gaetz “talking about Britney Spears at all.” Instead, she suggested he get back to his job in the House. “Frankly, he needs to get back and start maybe voting on some stuff and let the young folks that are out there calling for the freedom of Britney — he can call for her freedom, but he needs to like, maybe do it elsewhere because it’s not a good look for him.”

The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
