New Movies On Demand: ‘A Quiet Place Part II,’ ‘The Sleepless Unrest,’ ‘Separation’ + More

Has your summer been too calm and terror-free? Allow me to change all of that. This week, there are tons of new movies on VOD that will scare the bejesus out of you and turn your cozy, content life upside down, each one more paralyzing than the next. John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place Part II, the sequel to the 2018 horror hit starring his wife Emily Blunt is out now. The follow-up film had the biggest theatrical opening of any film during COVID when it came out in May, and now it’s widely available to stream at home. If you’re a fan of The Conjuring films, you’re going to want to catch The Sleepless Unrest, a new documentary in which filmmakers Kendall and Vera Whelpton and several paranormal experts all moved into the real-life Conjuring house to experience the spirits within for themselves.

While those are all well and good, there is perhaps no phrase more terrifying in the English language than “puppets come to life,” and that’s just what happens in Separation. The title comes, in part, from the fact that young Jenny’s (Violet McGraw) parents are going through a divorce and vicious custody battle. When her mother Maggie (Mamie Gummer) dies suddenly, her father Jeff’s (Rupert Friend) life becomes even more complicated thanks to his father-in-law suing him for custody of Jenny, and, oh yeah, Jenny’s favorite puppets eerily coming to life in shocking and sickening ways. Also, Maggie might be haunting Jeff from beyond the grave as a demon? This movie is one spooky onion, each layer more creepy than the next.

These are just a few of the titles that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now!

A Quiet Place Part II

A Quiet Place has a premise that was destined to catch our attention: filmed in near-silence, a family, led by mother Evelyn (Emily Blunt) and father Lee (John Krasinski) struggles to survive a post-apocalyptic world where enemy aliens will kill them if they hear them moving, and they communicate using sign language. After the events of the first movie, part two picks up where the first left off, following the death of Lee and the annihilation of much of the human race. Evelyn and her children meet Emmett (Cillian Murphy), who takes them into his bunker and together they try to devise a way to escape the aliens and wipe them out. With a budget three times the original’s and a co-sign from executive producer Michael Bay, the sequel is bigger and less quiet than the first film, not that those are bad things, it’s still every bit as tense and exciting.

The Sleepless Unrest

The Conjuring films are based on the work of Ed and Lorraine Warren, who investigated paranormal goings-on in the 300-year-old Rhode Island home of the Perron Family. The Sleepless Unrest is a documentary film in which a film crew and paranormal experts chose to stay in that home for two weeks to investigate and document whether or not the house is still (allegedly) cursed by the witch who once inhabited it. Do they find irrefutable proof of spirits? Are there really things going bump in the night inside the house? While the filmmakers’ footage definitely sets viewers on edge, how much you believe it’s all due to ghosts is up to you, but it will certainly get your pulse racing as you try to figure out if the demons are real.
