7 Shows Like ‘Never Have I Ever’

Never Have I Ever is almost back, thank goodness! The comfort rom-com series has taken to Netflix with another charming season, sweeping our little Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) into a love triangle between Paxton Hall Yoshida (Darren Barnet) and Ben (Jaren Lewinson). Who will she choose? Will mom approve? You may have already binge-watched your way through the third season — and if you’re yearning for more teen rom-com series just like Never Have I Ever, we have some up our sleeve.

Netflix has had some pretty great success in the comfort TV department, nailing it with shows like The Babysitter’s ClubTeenage Bounty Hunters, and, of course, Never Have I Ever. Our list encompasses the very best of Netflix, but we also have some teen hits that are a little edgier — because Never Have I Ever isn’t afraid to hit some more serious topics, as well. And since it’s Mindy Kaling‘s series through and through, we’ve included one of her top shows.

From Love, Victor to Awkward, here are our picks of shows to watch after Never Have I Ever:

1

'The Mindy Project'

See where Mindy Kaling’s TV expertise all started with The Mindy Project (or, for that matter The Office, which she starred in and wrote for before The Mindy Project). The series follows Kaling as Mindy Lahiri, a spunky OB/GYN looking for love in the big city. If you love the lead of Never Have I Ever and the fast-paced rom-com humor, you’re sure to love The Mindy Project, which is pretty much just a grown-up version of the Netflix Original. Along with Kaling, the series also stars Chris Messina, Ike Barinholtz, and B.J. Novak.

'Sex Education'

Another Netflix Original, the British Sex Education follows the socially awkward Otis (Asa Butterfield) as he embarks on a journey in his sexual education — or more specifically, helping his fellow students with their sexual education, thanks to everything he’s learned from his mother (Gillian Anderson), an actual sex therapist. He decides to use his knowledge to improve his status at school, teaming up with bad girl Maeve (Emma Mackey) to help their classmates deal with their sexual problems.

'Awkward'

Want another show with a tragically humorous injury leading into the first episode? Try Awkward, MTV’s hit comedy about Jenna Hamilton (Ashley Rickards), a stumbly teen with an accident that gets blown way out of proportion. When she falls into the bath with her hairdryer, the student body thinks she was attempting suicide — now, struggling to embrace her accidental identity, she finds love in the oddest places. From a secret relationship with the most popular boy in school to being mocked by a cheerleader (“You’re welcome.”), things get pretty rough for her.

'I Am Not Okay With This'

Think Never Have I Ever, but with a superhero twist on top — that’s pretty much the premise of I Am Not Okay With This. The Netflix Original (which was sadly canceled after just one season) follows Syd (Sophia Lillis), an angsty teenager who must learn to navigate her sexuality, high school, family, and her new superpowers all at once. What a ride! The show is based on Charles Forsman’s graphic novel of the same name, and also has a bit of a Stranger Things vibe. Other cast members include Wyatt Oleff, Sofia Byrant, and Richard Ellis.

But with her brother Austin there to help, along with the new Baker family, Ginny may just find happiness in her new home.

'Love, Victor'

Welcome to Creekwood
Hulu

Love, Victor takes the hit rom-com Love, Simon and spins the story into a Hulu Original series. Victor is just like Simon — he’s on his own journey of self-discovery, closeted and facing the challenge of coming out to his friends and family. When things become too difficult for Victor to handle alone, he reaches out to Simon for assitance. Any fan of the many young faces in Never Have I Ever will feel at home in the teen ensemble cast and rom-com storylines of Love, Victor.

'Jane the Virgin'

Jane the Virgin is another TV show that may skew a little older than Never Have I Ever, but it feels ever so similar thanks to quirky plots and the stellar narration job. The series follows Jane (Gina Rodriguez), a young woman who, yes, is a virgin. Somehow, though, she ends up pregnant by the end of Episode 1. The rest of the saga unfurls around her pregnancy, mysterious killings at the nearby hotel, and new romances, all told in telenovela fashion. If you’re looking for another series with killer narration and tender romance storylines, check out Jane the Virgin.
