Netflix Announces Viewing Numbers for ‘Army of the Dead,’ ‘Mitchells vs. The Machines,’ More

Netflix has released its self-reported streaming numbers as a part of the 2021 second-quarter results, and  among the films and shows with strong numbers are Army of the Dead, The Mitchells vs. The MachinesShadow and Bone, and more.

Worth noting, the numbers cited by the mega-streamer are calculated by a Netflix-proprietary metric, so grain of salt past this point.

According to Netflix, one of the most “impactful” film titles was Zack Snyder’s zombie film Army of the Dead, which the streamer labeled as a “blockbuster.” The film, which is slated to have a prequel called Army of Thieves releasing in 2021’s fourth quarter, was viewed by over 75 million member households in its first 28 days of release.

Netflix also claimed Kevin Hart’s dramedy Fatherhood was “another hit,” drawing in around 74 million member households in its first 28 days on the platform. Family flick The Mitchells vs. The Machines earned the streamer’s title for biggest animated film release to date, with 53 million member households watching in its first four weeks.

“Our goal is to be everyone’s first choice for entertainment because of the variety and quality of our titles,” Netflix wrote in their shareholder letter. “And despite the COVID-related production delays in 2020, we were able to deliver an exciting portfolio of titles in Q2’21 that exemplify this ambition.”

Over in TV world, the Grishaverse’s Shadow and Bone nabbed over 55 million households choosing to watch in the first four weeks. Sweet Tooth, which is based on the DC comic, drew 60 million member households in its first 28 days on the platform.

Netflix, as mentioned earlier, does not measure its audience the way traditional networks do. The number of viewers the streamer reports is based on the number of subscribers who have just watched at least two minutes of the entertainment — that’s less than a trailer’s worth of content.

Just last week, Netflix series and specials received 129 Emmy nominations, barely taking second place to HBO’s 130. With 24 nominations, The Crown tied with Disney+’s The Mandalorian. Other notable titles included Bridgerton (with 12 nominations) and The Queen’s Gambit (receiving 18 nominations).
