In Netflix’s new series The Chair, Sandra Oh plays an English professor who has been made Chair of her department, which she likens to being “handed a ticking time bomb” because of how much chaos exists among her staff. In Killing Eve, Oh proved that she could deftly maneuver between dark, devastating situations as well as pitch black comedy, often in the same breath; and judging from the new trailer for The Chair, she’ll continue to showcase her talents for pivoting from comedy to drama once again.

Oh stars as Dr. Ji-Yoon Kim, the first chairwoman of the English department at the fictional liberal arts college called Pembroke University. In her new role, she finds herself clashing with an older generation of professors that she is now the boss of, including Holland Taylor and Bob Balaban. To further complicate her professional life, she might sort of have a crush on her colleague Bill Dobson, played by an especially rumpled, absent-minded professor-esque Jay Duplass. But that’s not just problematic because she’s his boss, he is also under scrutiny for controversial comments he made to his students and his career might be in jeopardy as a result.

The new series was co-created, co-written, and co-executive produced by Amanda Peet, who says that she wrote the part with Oh in mind and “stalked her” until she said yes. Peet, much like Olivia Wilde before her, also added that the set of the show had a “no-assholes” policy, and that by casting veteran actors Balaban, Taylor, and David Morse, they “won the lottery with this cast.”

Peet, Oh, David Benioff, and D.B. Weiss also co-produce the series which will premiere on Netflix on August 20.
