Michelle Monaghan and Michelle Monaghan to Play Identical Twins in Netflix Limited Series ‘Echoes’

Mission Impossible actress Michelle Monaghan has been cast in a dual role in which she will play twins with a secret in the upcoming Netflix series Echoes. Monaghan is no stranger to prestige dramas, having earned a Golden Globe nomination for her work in the first season of True Detective on HBO, and more recently starring in Hulu’s The Path.

The limited series will consist of seven episodes, and will tell the story of two adult identical twins, Leni and Gina, played by Monaghan, who have swapped identities since childhood. The women have secretly lived double lives, unbeknownst to their husbands and family, but all of that changes when one sister disappears. Brian Yorkey, who developed the book 13 Reasons Why into a series for Netflix, and Quinton Peeples, who produced Runaways and 11.22.63, will co-executive produce and serve as showrunners for the series.

In addition to Monaghan, plenty of other actors have famously taken on twin roles, like Armie Hammer in The Social Network, Hayley Mills and Lindsay Lohan in the Parent Trap films, and Tatiana Maslany (playing more than a dozen clones of herself) in Orphan Black.

And Monaghan is a great actress, but we can’t help but feel like this series is missing an opportunity to unite her with her doppelganger Ruth Wilson for some fan service-y celebrity twinning on screen. Ah well.
