Apple TV+ is no longer the underestimated dawdler to the streaming landscape. Yes, indeed, Apple did launch its paid streaming service in late 2019—when the armies of the streaming wars were already battling it out. But, as with most things Apple, the premium service found a way to persevere through sheer quality of product and weaseled its way into hearts and minds for a measly $4.99 per month (or $49.99 per year).
With its critically acclaimed shows and movies winning awards (Apple TV+ received 35 Emmy nominations in all) and its active ability to break through an already crowded entertainment environment, you may be wondering how you too can get in on the Apple TV+ action.
The most pressing reason to subscribe to Apple TV+ right now is today’s obsessively monitored Season 2 premiere of the Jason Sudeikis-led soccer comedy, Ted Lasso. The heartwarming, sweet and frankly hysterically dry show earned a whopping 20 Emmy noms this year, making it the most nominated freshman comedy series in history. And though Season 2 doesn’t pick up exactly where Season 1 left off, we are again plopped directly into a hard scrabble season for the fictional British AFC Richmond Football Club.
Thankfully, according to Decider’s Meghan O’Keefe, the show avoids the sophomore slump in its new season.
“The good news is Ted Lasso is still the best comedy on TV. In the six episodes sent to critics, the show’s iconic blend of heart and humor were still omnipresent in every scene. However, Ted Lasso Season 2 does make some bold swings straight out the gate, whether we’re talking about some surprising plot developments, a standalone Christmas episode (that reeks of BBC and ITV’s chummy holiday specials), or one episode that stretches episodic run time and the rom-com clichés,” says O’Keefe.
If you haven’t already subscribed, there are a bunch of ways you can get AppleTV+ for free. Though any new customer can try Apple TV+ for seven days by simply signing up, Apple quietly changed its terms for its longer trials and is only offering three free months with the purchase of new Apple hardware, including an iPhone, iPad (now on sale on Amazon), Apple TV with the clever new remote or iMac. You can also nab the Apple TV+ free trial if you subscribe to any of the Apple One tiers, which let you bundle services like Apple Music, Apple Arcade and Apple News Plus.
Sony, however, is celebrating Ted Lasso’s return with scarcely retained glee, and is offering all current and new PS5 users a six-month free trial to Apple TV+. Target is also joining in the football fun and will give away four months of Apple TV+ to all its Target Circle customers.
