‘Dexter’ Revival: Michael C. Hall is Back for New Blood in the New Showtime Trailer

Dexter is back for new blood. During yesterday’s (July 25) panel for the series at San Diego Comic-Con 2021, Showtime released the official trailer for the show’s revival, debuting the first look at Season 9 of the series. The long-awaited new episodes, which are being called Dexter: New Blood, are set to release later this year.

The new trailer finds Dexter (Michael C. Hall) ten years after moving to rural Oregon, living life under the fake name “Jim Lindsay.” He’s working at an outdoors store surrounded by plenty of knives — but, hey, he’s trying to live a normal life now. Still, with a title like New Blood and some dark hints sprinkled amidst the trailer, it seems pretty obvious that Dexter’s still up to his nighttime gig of serial killing. And by the looks of the trailer, it seems like someone may be tracking him down, too.

Dexter first debuted on Showtime in 2006, ending in 2013 after eight seasons on the network. Last year, however, the show was announced as returning for at least one more season to catch up with the characters. In the final moments of Dexter‘s eighth and thought-to-be final season, Dexter moved to small town Oregon after faking his own death.

During the show’s Comic-Con panel, Hall acknowledged the criticism of the series finale by saying the reactions paved the way for Season 9: “The chance to revisit it and, in the process, redefine the sense of the show’s ending and the sense of the show’s legacy was certainly part of our motivation.”

Along with Hall, the reboot will also bring back original showrunner Clyde Phillips to helm the project again. A handful of the show’s original cast members, including John Lithgow and even Jennifer Carpenter, who was killed off in the 2013 finale but will make her way back in some sort of cameo. Other cast members include Julia Jones, Jamie Chung, and Clancy Brown.

Dexter: New Blood will air 10 episodes on Showtime starting on November 7. It’s currently unknown if this is a single one-and-done season, or if Dexter will be picked up for a Season 10.
