Diane Sawyer Shoots Her Shot with Ted Lasso: “I’m In. Your Move.”

We’re just one week into the new season of Ted Lasso, and the mustachioed master is already making major plays. In the Apple TV+ series’ Season 2 premiere, Jason Sudeikis‘s endearing leading man expresses his fondness for American TV icon Diane Sawyer. And she couldn’t resist the khaki-clad soccer coach — who could? — responding to his proposition on Twitter.

In the episode, a recently single Ted waltzes into his pal Rebecca’s (Hannah Waddingham) office, greeted by fellow AFC Richmond teamsters Keeley Jones (Juno Temple) and Higgins (Jeremy Swift). When offered a cheeky cocktail, Ted can’t resist — just like he can’t resist a little jest, which is when Saywer gets her name dropped.

“What would you say to a cocktail, Coach Lasso?” Rebecca says, setting up the joke perfectly.

“Aw, the same thing I’d say to Diane Sawyer if she ever asked me out on a date: yes, please,” Ted responds.

Yesterday evening (June 25), ever the Ted Lasso fan, Sawyer shared the clip on Twitter with a simple response to the pitch: “Dear @TedLasso – I’m in. Your move.”

It’s worth noting that this is Sawyer’s first tweet since May 2020. Ted Lasso’s proposition must have sparked Sawyer’s triumphant return to the website — because, let’s be honest, only he could make waves like that.

And because Sawyer told him it was his move, Ted made a swift play right back. It wasn’t long before Ted Lasso’s Twitter account replied right back with yet another pop-culture joke.

“Oh my…you’ve got me more on my heels than Lady Gaga at the Met Gala,” Ted Lasso’s Twitter account wrote. “Any chance you like biscuits?”

So, after shooting their shots, will Sawyer and Ted Lasso make an appearance in Season 2 together? Or go on a date in real life? Actor Jason Sudeikis may be romancing his Ted Lasso co-star Keeley Hazell, but Lasso is extremely single. Can a fictional character and a legendary broadcaster make it work? Only time, and freshly-baked biscuits, will tell.

The first episode of Ted Lasso‘s second season is currently streaming on Apple TV+, with new episodes debuting weekly on Fridays to the platform.
