LeVar Burton’s First ‘Jeopardy!’ Episode Overshadowed by Contestant’s Record for Lowest Score Ever

LeVar Burton had his long-awaited debut as Jeopardy! guest host last night (July 26) — but that didn’t stop some chaotic gameplay from taking center stage on the show, and the focus away from Burton. While fans tuned in to see him formally audition for the permanent host gig, their focus was averted to contestant Patrick Pearce’s incredibly low score. So low, in fact, that it became a new Jeopardy! record for the lowest score ever.

Pearce, a product specialist from California, could not stop doling out incorrect answers on last night’s edition of the ABC game show. For most of the night, he was (unsuccessfully) attempting to crawl out of the hole. But it was a major blow during a Daily Double that really snagged him: a question about U.S. government buildings overseas stumped Pearce, sending him into record-breaking lows.

Pearce’s final score of negative $7,400 breaks the record previously held by Stephanie Hull since March 2015, according to Slate, where she had negative $6,800. Thanks to his sub-zero number, Pearce was not invited to play in Final Jeopardy.

Guest host Burton may have been light on the teasing front, but Twitter quickly took note of the incredibly low score. “I don’t know how Patrick sees his friends and family again,” one Twitter user wrote. “Just an abysmal showing. Jeopardy should legit make him pay 7400 dollars.”

Also excited for Burton’s debut as guest host, a handful of Twitter users grabbed some memes and references to his shows while talking about Pearce’s major L. One viewer even took note of the massive viewership that probably tuned in for Burton — it’s more than likely that Pearce had a larger-than-usual audience for his low record. Poor guy!

“Wait, hold up. Did I (and probably a whole lotta other folks) just tune in for the first time in a LONG time to watch the lowest recorded score in #Jeopardy history?” he wrote. “If so, now I feel even worse for him.”

Jeopardy! airs weeknights on ABC at 7/6c.
