Watch Will Smith Play Venus and Serena Williams’ Father in ‘King Richard’ Trailer

Legendary tennis players Venus and Serena Williams are getting the biopic treatment. Warner Bros. has unveiled the first trailer for its highly-anticipated sports drama King Richard, which is set to star Will Smith as Richard Williams, the father of both athletes.

The upcoming film is based on the inspiring true story of Richard, who was key to both Venus (Saniyya Sidney) and Serena’s (Demi Singleton) success in the tennis world. Highly driven and ready to go the distance for his two girls, Richard makes it his life mission to take his daughters from the streets of Compton to a more global court.

“This world ain’t never had no respect for Richard Williams,” he says to his to young girls in the trailer. “But they’re going to respect y’all.”

While fans of Venus and Serena Williams will get a kick out of a handful of throwback moments in the trailer — like their “I’m Venus” and “I’m Serena” introductions — it’s clear that this story will focus more on their relationship to their father. Both women, who have gone on to both be ranked No. 1 in the world at different points in their career, are executive producing the project.

Reinaldo Marcus Green directed the film, with a script penned by Zach Baylin. Along with Smith, Sidney, and Singleton, the all-star cast is set to include Aunjanue Ellis, Jon Bernthal, Tony Goldwyn, and Dylan McDermott.

Both Williams women executive produced the project alongside their other sister, Isha Price. Other folks who exec produced the film include James Lassiter, Jada Pinkett Smith, Adam Merims, Lynn Harris, Allan Mandelbaum, Jon Mone, and Peter Dodd.
