From record-setting low scores to what could be the “most annoying contestant ever,” LeVar Burton is having quite the week as Jeopardy! guest host. Fans of the ABC game show are starting to get quite peeved by contestant Matt Amodio in particular, thanks to an odd quirk he’s established while playing the game. It’s something fairly small, and folks might not have picked up on the issue if it weren’t for Amodio’s hearty six-game winning streak.
So, what’s the big issue? Actually, that should be a statement: what is the big issue. Amodio continually utters the wrong word when he recites his answer: when an answer is a person, the contestant uses “What’s” instead of “Who’s.” Although fans are reveling in Amodio’s glorious win after win, they’re exhausted by this flub.
“I am impressed by Matt on @Jeopardy but he uses ‘What’s’ regardless of if the answer is a thing or a person — for a few nights in a row,” one Twitter user wrote. “Shouldn’t a person always be ‘who’?!?”
And these viewers are correct — Amodio does use “what” instead of “who” when referring to people. On last night’s (July 28) episode, Amodio gave three answers referring to Anna Faris, John Cleese, and Jim Parsons, saying “what’s Faris,” “what’s Cleese,” and “what’s Parsons.”
But not all are against champ Amodio’s style, believe it or not! More than anything, folks are in awe of Amodio’s brilliance as he continues to excel in the game. The “What” haters may have to just get used to his technique because it seems like Amodio may stick around for a while, if he stays on his current wave of success.
“Digging #Jeopardy Matt and don’t mind that he says ‘what’ instead of ‘who’ because he gets his answers right,” one Twitter user shared.
Jeopardy! airs weeknights on ABC at 7/6c.
