‘Ted Lasso’: Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, and Phil Dunster Debate the “Real Love Story” of Season 2

Ted Lasso Season 2 Episode 2 “Lavender” sees the return of the bad boy of AFC Richmond. Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster) might have thought he was on top of the world last season, but life has humbled him. After being unceremoniously kicked off a hit British reality dating show, Jamie is not only revealed as a major twat to the public, but dropped from the line up over at Man City. Lost, Jamie turns to the two people who ever successfully got through to him: former flame Keeley Jones (Juno Temple) and ex-coach Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis). However Keeley is happily boo-ed up with Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) now and Ted Lasso is loath to disrupt the new dynamics of his team.

So is Jamie Tartt coming back to Richmond in Ted Lasso Season 2? Uh, well that’s asking me to divulge some big spoilers for Ted Lasso Season 2 Episode 2. But does his return to the show hint that Season 1’s Roy/Keeley/Jamie is coming back? Well, to answer that first question we asked the Ted Lasso stars themselves…

“How dare you?” Brett Goldstein protested with a smile when the idea was brought up. “Hush your mouth.”

Goldstein’s co-star, Juno Temple, was a little more thoughtful about the prospect. “I think [Keeley’s] very invested in the relationship with Roy, but I think she wants Jamie to grow as a man and reach his full potential.”

“But I think when she’s invested, she’s invested,” Temple said. “Like in True Romance, when Alabama Wiley is like, ‘I’m 100% monogamous.’ You know? And I think there’s another little ounce of her that’s like that. When she’s in a relationship, she is committed to that person.”

Goldstein was then curious what Jamie Tartt himself had to say about the quesiton. “What did Phil say? I’ll fucking kill him,” Goldstein said.

Like Temple, Dunster thought the answer to that question was less about a love triangle and more about the nature of his character.

“I’ll say to you what I said to Brett [Goldstein], to Jason [Sudeikis], to Brendan [Hunt], to Joe Kelly, the creators of the show… the real love story here is Jamie and Roy,” Dunster said. “I think that the great thing about the two of them is that they’re so similar. More similar than they’d—well, I actually think they do know they’re very similar and hate that.”

However Dunster teased that “dynamic between the three of them” was going to get interesting in Ted Lasso Season 2.

“There still is a dynamic there at play that still leads to a lot of conflict and drama,” Dunster said.

Ted Lasso Season 2 Episode 2 “Lavender” is now streaming on Apple TV+.
