After an ending like Outer Banks Season 2, you can’t help but want more. Not only does this new season dive deeper into the cutest couple on television. It also delivers a truly jaw-dropping twist that’s poised to change the entire course of this wild show.

If that finale left you craving a new batch of episodes, you’re not alone. Here’s what we know about the possibility of Outer Banks Season 3. Additionally, Decider spoke to series’ creators and executive producers Josh and Jonas Pate about their plans for a new season and how long they want to keep creating their coast-loving thriller.

Will There Be an Outer Banks Season 3?

At the moment it’s too early to say. Netflix has yet to greenlight the teen drama for a third season, but that’s not necessarily a death wish. Typically it takes Netflix a few weeks before the streaming service decides to renew or cancel a show. And right now the numbers for Outer Banks look pretty promising. On the first day of Season 2’s release, the series jumped onto Netflix’s Top 10 in the U.S. list. That’s a good sign if you’re hoping for more episodes.

When Could Outer Banks Season 3 Premiere?

Outer Banks has already done the impossible. It released a new season on time while filming in a foreign country during a global pandemic. Applause all around, team. Because of that, we’re pretty confident that the Outer Banks crew can stick to their deadlines.

In July of 2020 Outer Banks was renewed for a Season 2. Almost a year later to the date, that season premiered. Based on this timeline and hoping that there are no more COVID-related delays, we can likely expect Outer Banks Season 3 to premiere in the summer of 2022. This is all assuming that the drama gets renewed, of course.

What Could Happen in Outer Banks Season 3?

A whole lot. Season 2’s finale ended on several huge twists. First and foremost, Ward (Charles Esten) isn’t dead. He faked his death to avoid the cops and is now hellbent on getting his family out of dodge. You know who else isn’t dead? Big John (Charles Halford). In the final moments the supposedly deceased papa reappeared and vowed to help Limbrey (Elizabeth Mitchell) find her beloved Shroud.

If there’s a Season 3, Sarah (Madelyn Cline) and John B (Chase Stokes) will have to confront the return of their fathers. Pope (Jonathan Daviss) will also have to find a way to get back Denmark’s cross, his ancestor’s beloved treasure. Oh, and these teens will have to  find a way off of a seemingly abandoned island in the middle of nowhere before they can do any of this. One thing’s for sure: If there’s a new season, it’s going to be wild.

How Many Seasons of Outer Banks Will There Be?

That’s ultimately up to Netflix. But if the streaming giant decides to continue its hit drama, Outer Banks‘ creators have a plan for what’s to come. “I would say five (seasons),” series co-creator and executive producer Josh Pate told Decider. “That’s an honest answer for me. There’s still a lot of stuff we want to do. We have a lot of ideas.”

“My answer is, as long as we can keep making it good and we’re still excited. That’s the number. Definitely more than three,” co-creator and EP Jonas Pate added.

The creative team even has a general general outline in mind for future seasons. Just like how Pope’s story is the center of Season 2, the team wants to focus on a different character every installment. “Hopefully, if we keep going, they’ll be other characters we kind of spotlight to come forward. If we get future seasons,” Josh Pate said.
