As we struggle through our second summer of COVID, travel may not be exactly back to normal, but many of us are finding a way to get away. And though the new remote lifetstyle has allowed for more freedom when it comes to where we decide to go and for how long, it’s also made us realize how important a working WiFi signal is—for both work and play.

Why We Chose It: Once we realized we could work from anywhere this summer, we understood the need for a mobile hotspot that could travel along with us. With a family of four, including two teens, it was important to have the freedom to be able to head out for a few days, or weeks even—and still be able to work, stream and communicate.
We chose the Skyroam Solis Lite because it works with any data plan, and because if we decided to head to the UK and Europe to see family, could still get Internet access overseas. We also appreciated its diminutive size and how easy it was to throw into any bag—and find it just as simply with its flaming orange color.
Why You Need It: The Skyroam Solis Lite does not use a SIM card. Instead, once you purchase the hardware, you can virtually connect to local mobile data to create a private WiFi network which can connect up to 10 different devices at once across 130 countries with unlimited LTE data. That includes phones, tablets, laptops and anything else you can think of. You just power it up, then turn it on with the one button on the top of the device. Next, just create an account on the app or online portal–it will walk you through everything you need to do to get started.
Data plans are super flexible, which also made the Solis Lite appealing, and you can activate 24-hour daypasses for as little as $9 a day, subscribe to an unlimited data plan starting at $99 or pay-per-GB WiFi plan for $9 for each gigabyte of data. For anyone who has dealt with international data plans before a trip, you know how confusing, and expensive, it can get. The Solis Lite helps take the sting out of using your phone overseas, plus you won’t get hit with any extra charges because you have control of your own data usage.
You can charge the hotspot’s battery with a USB-C cable, which means we didn’t have to drag around a bunch of different cords or chargers for every single device. You’ll then be able to retrieve the password from a label on the bottom of the hotspot. Plus, you’ll get about 16 hours on one single charge.
Unfortunately, because of COVID restrictions, we did not end up heading to England, but we did do a bunch of smaller trips in the US and it was fabulous to know we’d have speedy, consistent Internet access when and where we needed it.
