‘Yellowstone’ Prequel Taps Sam Elliott, Faith Hill, and Tim McGraw to Helm Paramount+ Series

Y:1883, the prequel to MTV‘s hit western saga Yellowstone, has tapped a star-studded trio of actors to helm the upcoming Paramount+ series. Sam Elliott will join country darlings Faith Hill and Tim McGraw in the upcoming show, which is set to follow the events leading up to Kevin Costner‘s storyline in the present day.

According to the logline, the highly-anticipated Paramount+ series “follows the Dutton family as they embark on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America. It is a stark retelling of Western expansion, and an intense study of one family fleeing poverty to seek a better future in America’s promised land — Montana.”

Elliott, who was recently Oscar-nominated for his husky performance in A Star Is Born, will play “tough as nails” Shea Brennan. Though Shea is a handsome cowboy, the character report details that there is “immense sadness in his past,” and that he is currently guiding a group of folks from Texas to Montana.

“It all starts with the writing, and Taylor Sheridan is a brilliant writer,” Elliott said in a statement. “I think the western genre speaks clearly to both of us. The classic struggles of man against man, man against nature, and man against himself. It’s all there, in 1883, and I’m honored to be a part of it.”

Country stars Hill and McGraw have been married since 1996 and will star as James and Margaret Dutton — Yellowstone fans will surely recognize that surname! James and Margaret are the patriarch and matriarch of Costner’s beloved Dutton family.

“This is truly a dream job,” McGraw added. “Taylor has found a way of storytelling that brilliantly creates these epic dramas and family sagas with so much depth and creativity. The Duttons are tremendous characters and it’s so thrilling to be able to bring them to life. As a kid growing up riding horses, you think about dream jobs like this and I am just so excited to work with this amazing cast and crew.”

1883 will be executive produced by Sheridan, the original creator of Yellowstone. It’s one of two spin-offs from Yellowstone, which is also set to release 6666 based on the For Sixes ranch in West Texas.
