‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist’ May be Picked up by Roku for Movie Special, After NBC Cancellation

After getting axed by NBCZoey’s Extraordinary Playlist may have hit the right note at Roku. The Jane Levy-led series is reportedly potentially getting a second life over at Roku, which is in discussions with producer Lionsgate Television to revive the story as a movie special. Variety confirmed the news, which also announced that the original cast is set to return, including Levy.

According to the news, Roku and Lionsgate are in talks on the project, but there’s no deal signed yet. The project would include a two-hour movie special slated to hit the Roku Channel around the 2021 holidays, and would even give Roku the opportunity to pick up Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist for a third season.

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist was canceled after two seasons at NBC earlier this year. There were reportedly discussions about moving the series to NBCUniversal’s streaming service, Peacock, for a third season, but that opportunity fizzled out. Lionsgate decided to shop the show elsewhere, and it appears they’ve landed with Roku.

Levy stars as the titular Zoey in the series, a young computer coder who starts hearing everyone’s innermost thoughts via musical interlude after a CT scan goes awry. Along with Levy, the series stars Alex Newell, Skylar Astin, John Clarence Stewart, Mary Steenburgen, Andrew Leeds, Alice Lee, Michael Thomas Grant, Kapil Talwalker, Lauren Graham, and Harvey Guillén.

The dramedy series was created by Austin Winsberg, who also executive produced the series alongside Kim Tannenbaum, Eric Tannenbaum, Paul Feig, David Blackman, Daniel Inkeles, and Sam Laybourne. Dan Magnante, Jason Wang, Emily Fox, Samantha McIntyre, and Robert Sudduth served as co-executive producers on the series.

Winsberg had been rallying to save the series after the news of the cancellation broke. He rallied fans to #SaveZoeysPlaylist, garnering a mass of support that helped to make the topic trend on social media platforms.

“I believe we can have a real chance somewhere else,” he wrote, “But the more fan support we can throw behind it-the better. Please tweet #SaveZoeysPlaylist. Let’s get it trending and let the powers that be know the appetite is strong.”
