Clint Eastwood Takes a Rooster on the Road in First Trailer for New HBO Max Western ‘Cry Macho’

Legendary actor-director Clint Eastwood is back with a new western. Cry Macho, which is set to debut in theaters and on HBO Max later this year, released its first official trailer, and if you wanted to see Eastwood back in action? Good news. If you didn’t? Well, stop reading this article, I guess.

Eastwood stars in the film as Mike Milo, a one-time rodeo star and washed-up horse breeder who decides to take a job from his ex-boss to bring the man’s son home from Mexico. Set in 1979, the film follows the unlikely duo as they trek on a surprisingly challenging journey, during which the old horseman finds a strong connection to the young boy.

“You used to be strong. Macho,” the boy says to Mike in the trailer.

“I used to be a lot of things,” Mike muses. “Not now. I’ll tell you something: this macho thing is overrated. Just people trying to be macho to show that they’ve got grit. That’s about all they end up with. It’s like anything else in life; you think you’ve got all the answers. Then you realize you get older and you don’t have any of them.”

At the end of the trailer, we even learn the meaning behind the title: Macho is the name of the young boy’s pet rooster, of course.

Along with Eastwood, the film stars Eduardo Minett, Natalia Traven, Dwight Yoakam, Fernando Urrejola, and Horacio Garcia-Rohas. Eastwood is directing from a screenplay written by Nick Schenck and M. Richard Nash, based on the novel by Nash. The film marks Eastwood’s first since the 2018 flick The Mule, adding onto the actor/director’s six-decade-long career in the industry.

Scroll up to watch the official trailer for Cry Macho, which will release simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max on September 17. The film will stream for free to HBO Max subscribers on the non-ad supported tier for 31 days before leaving the platform.
