Una Stubbs, the beloved actress from TV series like Sherlock, ‘Till Death Us Do Part, and EastEnders, has died. The actress, who was particularly well-known for her role as Mrs. Hudson on the BBC drama Sherlock, was 84.
Stubbs died in her home in Edinburgh surrounded by her family, her agent Rebecca Blond told BBC News. According to Blond, Stubbs had been ill for a few months.
“We are desperately sad to have lost not only a wonderful actress, whose screen and stage career, spanning over 50 years, was so extraordinarily varied, from ‘Till Death Us Do Part’ to ‘Sherlock,’ as well as memorable performances in the West End, at the Old Vic, Donmar Warehouse, Sheffield Crucible and National Theatre, but also a wickedly funny, elegant, stylish, graceful, gracious and kind and constant friend,” Blond said.
Stubbs made her on-screen debut in 1958 with the TV show Rush Hour. Later on, she starred in Peter Yates’ Summer Holiday and was known for playing Rita Rawlins on Till Death Us Do Part, reprising the role for Till Death and In Sickness and In Health two decades alter.
The actress has a stacked resume with over 70 screen credits in TV shows and films. In the more recent years, Stubbs was known for her role as Caroline Bishop on EastEnders, with other roles on Starlings, Call the Midwife, and The Durrells. Most recently, Stubbs played Mrs. Hudson, the landlady of 221 Baker Street, on Sherlock.
Tributes to the late actress have been pouring in on social media after the news broke earlier today. “Oh, Una Stubbs, how we will miss you,” wrote the official Sherlock account. “You famously said to Sherlock that you were ‘his landlady, not his housekeeper’ but to us, you were so much more than either of those things — you were absolutely our Sherlock mum. You knitted us together. Always loving life, always wise, always wickedly funny and always kind.”
Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss also weighed in, adding: “It was one of the great joys of my life to work so closely with and to adore Una Stubbs. She was a wonderful, wonderful woman and a great and serenely graceful actor. Mischief was in her blood. We were so blessed that she became our imperishable Mrs. Hudson.”
