Is ‘Respect’ on HBO Max or Netflix? When Will the Aretha Franklin Movie Be Streaming?

It’s about time that Aretha Franklin got the re-re-re-re-respect she deserves with a star-studded biopic movie, and that’s what she’s getting with Respect, which opens in theaters this weekend.

Directed by Liesl Tommy, Respect stars Academy Award-winning actor Jennifer Hudson as the legendary singer, songwriter, pianist, and all-around Queen of Soul. With a screenplay by Tracey Scott Wilson, the story will follow Aretha Franklin as a young girl singing in her father’s church choir, all the way up through her career as a musical superstar, while also enduring an abusive marriage and being a leading participant in the civil rights movement.

For fans of Franklin, it’s a movie that will not only tell the singer’s story and pay homage to her life, but it’s also a movie that will feature an incredible soundtrack of her hit songs, sung by the very talented Hudson. You don’t want to miss it, so here’s where to watch Respect and when you can expect Respect on streaming.

WHERE TO WATCH RESPECT:

Right now, the only place to watch the Aretha Franklin biopic is in a movie theater when the film opens on Friday, August 13. You can find a showing of Respect at a theater near you here—and the CDC recommends you wear a mask if you go.

WILL RESPECT ON HBO MAX?

No. HBO Max—which is owned by Warner Media—has been the streaming home of Warner Bros. blockbusters like The Suicide Squad this year, but Respect is not a Warner Bros. movie. For that reason, it will not be on HBO Max at the same time that it’s in theaters. While it may be on HBO Max someday, it will not be any time soon.

IS RESPECT ON NETFLIX?

No. Respect is releasing exclusively in theaters, and will not be on Netflix. However, you can watch the James Brown biopic, Get On Up, on Netflix.

CAN I STREAM RESPECT ANYWHERE? WHEN WILL RESPECT BE ON STREAMING?

Respect is not currently streaming anywhere, and a digital release date for Respect has not yet been announced.

It’s hard to say when Respect will become available to buy or rent on video-on-demand. Back in May, the same studio distributing Respect—United Artists, a subsidiary of MGM—released the movie Wrath of Man on digital about three weeks after the film opened in theaters. However, because Respect is a much bigger movie, it may be in the theaters for longer than three weeks. We’ll just have to wait and see.
