‘Adventure Time’ Spinoff ‘Fionna & Cake’ Set at HBO Max

The Adventure Time universe is expanding. HBO Max has given a series order to Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake, a half-hour young adult spinoff series based on characters from the original animated saga. Instead of following Finn and Jake, this new story will unfurl around fearless sword-wielding adventurer Fionna and her magical cat sidekick Cake.

Sound familiar? Fionna & Cake stems from the characters in the series that are gender/species-swapped versions of Finn and Jake that rear their heads in a handful of episodes. The series will still take place in the world of Ooo, though, like the original.

The new episodes will follow Fionna and Cake who, with help from the former Ice King, embark on a journey through the multi-verse and into self-discovery. But they’ll have to watch out — an evil new antagonist is tracking them down, attempting to erase them from existence while hiding around them in Ooo.

Adventure Time truly broke the mold and earned legions of passionate fans in the process,” said Billy Wee, SVP of Comedy and Original Animation at HBO Max, in a statement. “We are thrilled to partner with our friends at Cartoon Network Studios to continue innovating and expanding the Adventure Time universe with this world class team.”Hey

The ten-episode series will be created by Adventure Time alum Adam Muto, who will serve as showrunner and executive producer on the project. Muto has won two Primetime Emmy’s for his work on Adventure Time, which has snagged eight statues in total for its eight years on Cartoon Network.

“‘Adventure Time’ broke boundaries and was a shining example of how impactful animated storytelling can be,” said Sam Register, President of Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studio. “We are excited to partner with HBO Max to carry that tradition on to new heights, lands and magical worlds.”

This installation marks another foray into the Adventure Time franchise made by HBO Max, who have already released four one-hour-long specials with Adventure Time: Distant Lands. The fourth and final special Wizard City, is set to release this fall.
