Stephen Colbert Compares Donald Trump and Joe Biden’s Taliban Response to ‘Cats’ Movie

Stephen Colbert tore into both Presidents Biden and Trump last night (August 16) on The Late Show over their lackluster handling of the Taliban takeover, even digging his claws in with a Cats-related roast. The CBS talk show host began with the current president, slamming Joe Biden for his near-complete disregard on the matter.

“Because he’s the president, President Biden’s getting a lot of criticism,” Colbert began. He then played a clip of ABC’s Martha Raddatz calling Biden’s handling of the issue a “massive intelligence failure.”

“That’s gotta sting,” Colbert responded, adding, “when people describe your foreign policy the same way they describe Ron DeSantis.”

The talk show host went further into his roast of Biden, sharing the image from The White House of Biden meeting with top security officials. Although the President appears to be working hard, Colbert called out the fact that time times on the international clocks were all wrong in the image.

“The only clock that matters is the one in Afghanistan, and it’s just been reset to the 13th century,” Colbert said, also saying that critics who say the image is fake  are wrong: “If it was staged, would they have put him completely alone at a conference table? Apparently, there’s also been a rapid withdrawal from Joe Biden. He looks like the only grandpa in the dayroom watching Jeopardy!

Colbert also played a clip of Biden last month calling a Taliban takeover “highly unlikely.”

“Wow,” said Colbert. “That is the most inaccurate prediction from a president since Abe Lincoln said, ‘See you after the play.’”

The host then turned the tables to talk about the other side of the aisle, discussing Trump’s call for Biden to “resign in disgrace” over the foreign affairs. Colbert dragged Trump for besmirching Biden over pulling troops out of Afghanistan when he, himself, has recently taken credit for it.

“The former president is right about one thing: his policies are equally responsible for the Taliban’s takeover,” Colbert said. “You can’t put all the blame for a debacle you set the stage for. That’s like Andrew Lloyd Weber calling Cats a terrible movie — you wrote a musical with no plot! How did you think this was going to end?”

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35/10:35c. Watch the full clip from last night’s show in the video above.
