In the mood for something new to stream this weekend? If so, you might be interested in Netflix’s new dramedy The Chair.

Created by Amanda Peet and Annie Julia Wyman, the series centers on Dr. Ji-Yoon Kim (Sandra Oh), a former professor gamely attempting to navigate her way through all the challenges that come with her new role as the Chair of the English department at prestigious Pembroke University. The first woman to chair the department and one of the few staff members of color at the university, Ji-Yoon is forced to deal with all the ups, downs, and office politics that accompany her new position. Also starring Jay Duplass, Holland Taylor, Nana Mensah, David Morse, and Bob Balaban, the six episode series can be binged in only three hours.

Will Netflix renew The Chair for a second season? Here’s everything we know so far.

HOW MANY EPISODES ARE THERE OF NETFLIX’S THE CHAIR?

The Chair consists of six episodes.

HAS THE CHAIR BEEN RENEWED FOR SEASON 2?

Nope. The Chair has yet to be renewed for a second season, but that’s which is completely normal considering the show was only released on August 20.

WHO’S IN THE CAST OF THE CHAIR?

The series is headlined by Sandra Oh (Killing Eve, Grey’s Anatomy), Jay Duplass (Transparent, Togetherness), Holland Taylor (Legally Blonde, Two and a Half Men), Nana Mensah (Bonding, 13 Reasons Why), David Morse (St. Elsewhere, The Green Mile), and Bob Balaban (Gosford Park, A Mighty Wind, Best in Show, Waiting for Guffman). Decider recently published a “Woman Crush Wednesday” article about Nana Mensah.

WILL THERE BE A SEASON 2 OF THE CHAIR ON NETFLIX?

This is a tricky question. Unlike shows like Brand New Cherry Flavor, The Queens Gambit, Unbelievable, and What/If, Netflix doesn’t officially list The Chair as a miniseries. A miniseries distinction doesn’t necessarily mean there can’t be a second season of a show (The White Lotus was just renewed for Season 2), but it often means that the program was initially conceived as a one-season series.

*** The Chair spoilers ahead ***

The Chair has earned positive reviews (it currently has an 81% Tomatometer Score) and is produced by David Benioff and DB Weiss, the duo behind Game of Thrones who signed a reported $200 million multiyear deal with Netflix in August of 2019. At first glance, the season finale wraps up everyone’s stories rather nicely, but the final scene reveals that Bill (Jay Duplass) turned down Pembroke’s settlement offer and is going to try to get his job back, leaving the door open for the plot that could drive Season 2. So much of a potential second season depends on how well the show does for Netflix and the availability of Oh, Duplass, Taylor, Benioff, Weiss, and series creators Amanda Peet and Annie Julia Wyman.

A second season isn’t a given, but considering the talent involved we believe there’s a better than average chance that the show returns for Season 2 in late 2022 on Netflix. Decider will update this story as new information becomes available.
