We can’t go back to Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri just yet, but Netflix is giving us the next best thing. This week marks the premiere of The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, Netflix’s animated prequel movie about Geralt’s mentor. And if animated action scenes à la Castlevania are your jam, then you’re about to be very happy.

Witchers weren’t just born as monster hunters for hire. They were boys who were taken from their homes and raised by other witchers to be vicious killers and given countless dangerous potions to complete the process. That’s all to say, we’re about to meet the man who made Geralt. Wondering what the deal is with The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf? Here’s everything you need to know.

When Is The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf Premiere Date?

You may have to wait until December for The Witcher Season 2, but you only have to wait until Monday for a new witcher story. Nightmare of the Wolf premieres on Netflix Monday, August 23. Unlike the Netflix series, this new installment will be an 81 minute anime movie.

What Time Will The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf Premiere?

You know how this goes. Premieres of Netflix originals appear on the streaming service at 3/2c a.m. If you don’t see Nightmare of the Wolf appear right away on August 23, don’t panic. Refresh your browser or reload your Netflix app and it should pop up.

What Is The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf About?

Get ready to learn a lot about Geralt’s mentor, Vesemir (Theo James). Set long before the events of the series, Nightmare of the Wolf follows Vesemir when he was a young witcher. But when a mysterious new enemy threatens to destroy the order of The Continent, Vesemir’s youthful ease with the world will be put to the test.

This spinoff is especially exciting for fans on the novel and video games. For years we’ve known that the witcher fortress of Kaer Morhen was attacked by men in a battle that killed several of these monster hunters. But why this battle existed or what exactly happened has never been explored. That’s what Nightmare of the Wolf does all while making Vesemir look awesome.

Who’s in The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf Cast?

As mentioned before Theo James (Divergent, Golden Boy, Underworld: Awakening, Underworld: Blood Wars) voices the role of young adult Vesemir. The character will be played by Kim Bodnia in The Witcher Season 2. Lara Pulver (Spooks, Sherlock) voices Tetra, a powerful sorceress with an agenda of her own. Mary McDonnell (Dances with Wolves, Donnie Darko, Battlestar Galactica) voices Lady Zerbst, a wealthy noblewoman and widow. Finally, Netflix alum Graham McTavish (Castlevania, Outlander) plays Deglan, a witcher who is Vesemir’s mentor.
