Is Roy Kent Real? ‘Ted Lasso’ Star Brett Goldstein Denies CGI Conspiracy Theory

Brett Goldstein is getting real about those fan theories that his Ted Lasso character, Roy Kent, is actually a CGI creation. On Sept. 2, the Apple TV+ star took to Twitter to give his “final statement on the matter.” The catch? Goldstein’s face is obscured by a computer-generated character throughout the video.

“There’s a f*cking load of mad sh*t happening on the internet today as usual, and I just wanna clear up something once and for all,” he said. “I am a completely real, normal human man who just happens to live in a VFX house and does normal, human, basic things like rendering and buffering and transferring data.”

According to CNET, some Reddit users have recently become convinced that Goldstein isn’t a real, human actor due to his “similarity to PS4 FIFA characters, the sharpness of his appearance, and a disputed ‘glow’ that apparently surrounds him on screen.”

“[Apple TV+] must have imported him straight from FIFA,” one user wrote.

“He 100% is CGI,” said another. “I swear he glows off the screen.”

“I can neither confirm nor deny that if you entered data into an algorithm for ‘building the perfect actor’ it would produce Brett Goldstein,” Ted Lasso co-creator Brendan Hunt said in a statement to CNET.

While the great Roy Kent CGI debate is all in good fun, the wholesome Apple TV+ comedy has recently found itself at the center of some unexpectedly heated discourse. In a series of disgruntled “hot takes,” some have argued about whether the show’s second season is working so far, leading to further discussions about how audiences view weekly rollouts in the age of streaming.

Regardless, Ted Lasso is having no troubles in the awards season department thus far. The comedy’s first season scored 20 Primetime Emmy Award nominations this year, including outstanding comedy series, an oustanding lead actor in a comedy nod for Jason Sudeikis, and an outstanding supporting actor nomination for the completely real, normal human Goldstein.

New episodes of Ted Lasso premiere Fridays on Apple TV+.
