‘The Matrix Resurrections’ Shows Off First Footage, Teaser Poster

It’s almost here. Ahead of The Matrix Resurrections‘ December 22 premiere in theaters and on HBO Max, Warner Bros. has debuted a teaser poster for Lana Wachowski’s new film, and revealed that the first official teaser will debut on Thursday, Sept. 9. There’s also a promotional website with (no joke) 180,000 teaser videos: WhatIsTheMatrix.com.

The minimalist teaser poster shows the franchise’s iconic red and blue pills, with the tagline “The choice is yours.”

It also lists the website WhatIsTheMatrix.com, which was originally launched when the first Matrix movie premiered back in 1999. Up until today, the website hadn’t been updated since the original trilogy was released in 4K in 2018. But now visitors can decide between the red pill and the blue pill, just like Thomas Anderson (Keanu Reeves), aka Neo, did in the first film.

After you choose, a press release reveals that the website “will render one of over 180,000 unique teaser videos possible based on the pill chosen and time of day.” Each clip includes exclusive movie footage, which is sure to whet your appetite before the trailer arrives on Thursday.

Red pill footage includes narration from Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s character, who promises the world is not what it seems as one clip shows his character battling Neo in a dojo. The blue pill includes narration from fellow new cast member Neil Patrick Harris, who explains that you’re here because you’re struggling to tell fact from fiction. Cut to a scene of Neo trying to figure out what’s real and what’s not.

The Matrix Resurrections will bring back original Matrix stars Reeves and Carrie Anne-Moss, with the addition of characters played by Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Neil Patrick Harris, Jonathan Groff, Christina Ricci, and more. If this is a simulation, we’re lucky to be in it!
